Is it asbestos? Test it for $249.
A surveyor takes the sample and an IANZ-accredited laboratory tests it. If it's positive, we give you one fixed quote to remove it, done by a WorkSafe-licensed remover we name.
NZ Asbestos Removal is not a WorkSafe asbestos licence holder. Removal we arrange is carried out by licensed partners named, with their licence class and number, on each quote. Read the disclosure.
$249 incl. GST
- A competent surveyor visits and takes the sample
- One sample, IANZ-accredited laboratory report
- Extra samples $85 each at the same visit
Who does what
Four parties, and we are only one of them. That is deliberate: the laboratory and the clearance are independent of the people doing the removal.
- 1
We book it and price it
NZ Asbestos Removal takes the booking, arranges the visit, sends you the result and stays your single contact.
- 2
A competent surveyor samples
WorkSafe says sampling should only be done by a competent person, so a surveyor does it, not you and not a posted kit.
- 3
An IANZ-accredited lab tests
Analysis has to be done by an accredited laboratory (reg 11). You get their report, unedited.
- 4
A licensed partner removes and an independent person clears
Removal is carried out by a WorkSafe-licensed remover named on your quote. The clearance is done by someone independent of them (reg 41).
NZ Asbestos Removal doesn't hold a WorkSafe licence. Our partners do, and every quote shows theirs with the licence class and number, checkable on the WorkSafe licence holder register.

Class A, Class B or DIYFriable asbestos: Class A
Removing any amount of friable asbestos needs a Class A licence.
Read the ruleMore than 10 m² non-friable: Class B
Counted cumulatively across the whole removal project at the site, more than 10 m² of non-friable asbestos needs a Class B or Class A licence.
Read the ruleFive days' notice to WorkSafe
A licensed remover must notify WorkSafe in writing at least 5 days before licensed removal starts. No licensed job can begin sooner.
Read the ruleAn independent clearance, then a certificate
Someone independent of the remover inspects the area, and the area must not be reoccupied until a clearance certificate is issued.

What removal costs, before we quote you
Across New Zealand, asbestos removal jobs run about $1,000 to $40,000 and up, with a typical job around $7,000 and rates of $30–150 per m² (CheckMyBuilder, Asbestos removal cost, updated June 2026). Friable Class A work sits at the top of that range. Your quote is fixed once the material has been tested.
We don't publish per-material prices, because we could not source them from a New Zealand provider. Anyone who quotes you a per-square-metre figure for your roof before testing it is guessing.
Guides
All guidesCan I remove asbestos myself in NZ?
The honest answer: the asbestos regulations bind businesses, not a homeowner working on their own home — but WorkSafe calls DIY removal extremely dangerous, and the moment you hire anyone the licensing rules apply.
Read the guideAsbestos in NZ homes built before 2000
WorkSafe's cut-off is 1 January 2000: a home built before then may contain asbestos materials. Here is where it turns up, what to leave alone, and what is worth testing.

Your builder has a legal duty to identify asbestos before refurbishing a pre-2000 home. Here is the order to do things in, and where the five-day WorkSafe notice fits into your timeline.

All questionsDo I need to test before removing asbestos?
You need to know what the material is and how much of it there is, because that decides who may legally remove it and what a removal will cost. Nobody can give you a fixed removal price for an untested material, and a laboratory result is the only confirmation there is.
Can I take the sample myself?
WorkSafe says asbestos sampling should only be done by a reputable contractor, and for PCBUs, only by a competent person. We do not sell DIY sampling kits. Our $249 test sends a surveyor to take the sample and an IANZ-accredited laboratory to analyse it.
How much does an asbestos test cost in NZ?
Ours is $249 including GST for a surveyor visit and one sample, and $85 including GST for each extra sample at the same visit. Across other New Zealand providers checked on 15 September 2026, a visit and first sample runs $195–300 (Asbestos & Biological), $205 (Fibresafe) and from $220 plus GST (Asbestos Safe Consultancy).
Can I remove asbestos myself in New Zealand?
The asbestos regulations bind PCBUs, not a homeowner-occupier working on their own home, and WorkSafe says its PCBU guidance is not intended for homeowner-occupiers. WorkSafe still says doing it yourself is extremely dangerous. Hire anyone and the licensing thresholds apply to them.
Are you licensed by WorkSafe?
No. NZ Asbestos Removal is not a WorkSafe asbestos licence holder. Removal we arrange is carried out by licensed partners, named with their licence class and number on your quote, checkable on the WorkSafe asbestos licence holder register.
How long does removal take to start?
A licensed remover must notify WorkSafe in writing at least 5 days before licensed removal work starts (reg 34), so no licensed job can begin sooner than that. On top of that sits the remover's own lead time and the testing beforehand.
Not sure it's asbestos? That's what the test is for.
